Veteran Broadcaster and Gardener Roy Lancaster OBE regales the crowd with his tale of the lad from Bolton who discovered the Mexican Tobacco Plant. There's non-stop entertainment and a chance to rest the aching feet in the area around the historic central bandstand. |
| For sale at one of the many stalls was this larger than normal chess set, ideal for those who enjoy a classic wargame on their patio. Along with this Oriental style set, the more traditional Staunton pieces are available, along with childrens' favourite, 'draughts', all cast in weather-resistant concrete. |

There's all-day entertainment in the Arena too. When we got there, this big feller was hacking his way through a tree whilst stood on a springboard, 3 metres up in the air! Don't try this at home on your neighbours' Leylandii! |
| The Daily Mail is the main sponsor of the Southport Flower Show, and their display garden was a tad disappointing, to say the least. Very orthodox, no sense of adventure, traditional consrvative values - all that one expects from that publication. This run-of-the-mill water feature was a token effort at creating some interest. |

As if to emphasise the point, look at this typical bit of suburban British garden - artificial walling blocks, with artificial riven paving and geraniums planted in soldier-straight rows. Oh how very inspired! ;~) |
