Southport Flower Show 17-19th August 2000 The Marquees - Displays

In the centre of the first of the three, linked Grand Floarl Marquees is this charming fairytale cottage constructed by the holidaymakers from HM Prison at Kirkham and Thorncross YOI near Warrington. Stunningly coloured planting surrounds a thatched cottage and a cutesy wishing well. The path meanders towards the cottage and it's only only closer inspection that one realises them's ain't cobbles, them's is spuds!!

And it's not just flowers that the boys from the big house are adept at growing - take a look at these impressive veg that have produced in the prison garden. I'll bet the chef turns out a wonderful vegetable soup for dinner on Monday!

Water features are very 'in' at the moment, possibly something to do with expertgardener.com's Charlie Dimmock, and this is certainly one of the more original ones on view at the show. Very oriental in influence, this feature would appeal to any gardener with musical inclinations, with the brass treble clef that snakes around the bamboo Pan Pipes.

This lovely shady spot by B Watkinson of Hesketh Bank is centred around a single wooden garden seat, but who would want to sit there and miss this view? Soft grasses at the front with coleus flanking each side and taller, dark green foliage plants at the back. Enchanting!

You've got to hand it to Sefton MBC - they don't half put on a good show! This display is based upon the theme of the show, "The World in your Garden" and they've created this towering masterpiece by using flowers and fruits from all over the globe. I couldn't decide which view of this display I liked the most, so I settled on this incredibly warm tropical display.
